Gearing Up: Outdoor product reviews

Published Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004.

The following is an exerpt:

"More than 700 companies hawked their wares to thousands of retail buyers at the Winter Market Outdoor Retailer show, held at the Salt Palace Convention Center in early February.

Wandering among ice picks, winter boots and free adult beverages, two writers for The Salt Lake Tribune looked for innovative new gear and equipment that is still around -- for good reason. Here are their picks:

...

PowderFish Neck Gaiter: Jaime Philp had no intention of becoming an entrepreneur before she realized there was no neck gaiter on the market that would block wind, shed snow, wick away moisture and still allow the wearer to breathe. As an East Coast skier, Philp knew there was a need. She took four sewing classes, bought a used sewing machine and start testing fabrics. After working on the design, she bought a machine from eBay to embroider the PowderFish logo. She made all 130 of the neck gaiters she brought to last month's OR Show. Each one took an hour. She plans to have a manufacturer fill future orders.

"I have to find a manufacturer," she said, "because my neck is killing me." Philp expects the neck gaiters will be available in Utah next winter. Meanwhile, you can order them by calling PowderFish at 617-794-8376. Cost: $20. http://www.powderfish.com -- Janet Rae Brooks"

Dear Jill-
I hear it's been cold out your way. Maybe not as cold as home in the East but cold for the West? I'm supposed to be skiing Alta in a couple of weeks and was wondering how you dress to stay warm and what I should bring with me. -Girl Scout

Dear G.S.-
You're right that it has been unseasonably cold in these parts. It warmed up a bit this past week but for the most part our temps have hovered around 15 degrees. When I was in Jackson Hole, Wyo., the week before last the temp was -18 with wind chill.

To be honest, I am a total wimp. I get cold to the bone below 30 degrees. Plus, it's a lot different when I'm teaching.

...

My neck gets a freshly washed micro-fleece neckgaiter. If it's dirty, it won't keep me warm or free from breakouts. PowderFish makes a great gaiter out of a water-repellent, breathable, wind-resistant fabric called Polartec Windbloc-ACT.
